Best Places to live in North London

North London Coffee

North London and it’s thriving multicultural neighbourhoods are quickly becoming one the most sought-after districts by both local Londoners and visiting tourists.

Families as well as professionals are being attracted by the cosmopolitan character of the streets north of the river and with many of the places currently under redevelopment, there are many options to chose from when looking for a new place to stay. This is our take on what are the best areas to live in North London.

Kentish Town NW5

Independent shops, cool restaurants and great community

Kentish Town might seem like a neighbourhood where not much is actually happening at the first glance, but the reality is quite the contrary. Situated between hectic Camden Town and it’s massive markets, village style Highgate and bohemian Hampstead, Kentish Town is cherished by its residents and is also quickly becoming a tourist hotspot extension for those overwhelmed by the main markets.

Kentish Town also has a host of independent shops, cool bars and restaurants for locals and visitors to enjoy. Not to mention the great real ale available in the area’s award winning pubs. New eateries and refurbished establishments are appearing in Kentish Town almost daily but locals love the old favourites while embracing the best of new arrivals. To sum it up, one could think of Kentish Town as a slightly calmer, more sophisticated Camden Town.

Kentish Town offers excellent transport links via tube and it’s Northern Line, Thameslink and National Rail trains, the Overground, and a variety of bus services.

Camden Town NW1

Street food, live music and simply the atmosphere

Camden Town, having one of the best markets in London and perhaps in the world, is also one of London’s best places to live. This very colorful postcode is home to alternative culture, great street food, live music and you guessed it, shopping. Goth and punk clothing, body piercings, tattoos, vintage accessories and music on vinyl can all be purchased here. The atmosphere in this multicultural melting pot is just one continuous attack on your senses. There’s also a host of great restaurants and live music venues for the tourist and locals to enjoy.

If you decide to choose Camden Town as your home, then you will enjoy plenty of fun and never ending streams of tourists. Beware of Camden’s property prices that are quite high. In fact one of the most expensive in London.

The main tube station Camden Town services both Bank and Charing Cross branches of the Northern Line and is well connected with the centre. Residents of Camden can benefit from a quick underground service to major central locations such as King’s Cross St Pancras, London Bridge, Old Street, Leicester Square, Waterloo and Euston.

Highgate N6

Village style feel, Hampstead Heath and atmospheric pubs

Highgate is a suburban area in North London, situated at the eastern corner of mighty Hampstead Heath; a large, ancient park covering 790 acres. Often called Highgate Village, as until late Victorian times it was a distinct village outside London. It is a place like no other in the capital and offers beautiful city views and active community life. Apart from the leafy surroundings it features cool atmospheric pubs and restaurants.

Highgate is one of the most expensive areas in which to live. It has an active conservation body, to protect its character. The area has been a magnet for creative individuals and more recently, celebrities. Most residents are young professional couples looking to rent one or two bedroom flats.

Residents enjoy a 20 minute journey to Leicester Square and host of bus routes well connected with nearby Camden.

Hampstead Village NW3

Pubs, bars, restaurants and boutiques

Hampstead Village is situated at the western corner of Hampstead Heath, right across the park from Highgate. It is a little urban village, just like Highgate.

It features great restaurants, pubs and upmarket boutiques waiting to be explored. Hampstead High Street is at the heart of village life. Full of cafes, fantastic delis and galleries.

Hampstead is a 20-minute Tube ride from central London on the Northern line.

Restaurants and live music
